MIPsoft, the company behind the popular Blindsquare GPS app for the iPhone, Comcast, and Odin Mobile were among this year's winners for the American Foundation for the Blind's Access Awards. The AFB the Blind annually recognizes companies, organizations, and people who have broken down barriers to accessibility in extraordinary ways.
Blindsquare is one of the most popular GPS apps for the iPhone and includes innovative accessibility features such as integration with many popular Bluetooth headsets and restaurant menus from Foursquare.
Comcast was recognized for their talking set-top box, which is a part of their X1 platform. The talking features rolled out as a beta last November.
Odin Mobile has begun selling accessible cellular phones including basic models with keypads and voice feedback. It also offers customized technical support for users who have accessibility questions.
In addition, Microsoft was recognized for its partnership with AI Squared which provides free copies of the Window-Eyes screen reader for users of Microsoft Office, as well as its accessibility technical support hotline.
Joel Snyder, PH.D. is one of the leaders in the field of audio description and one of the experts on description technique and best practices.
Finally, the creation of the Orion TI-84 Plus Talking Graphing Calculator was recognized by a joint award given to its creators: Texas Instruments Education Technology, Orbit Research and the American Printing House for the Blind.
Winners will be recognized at the AFB's Annual Leadership Conference, which this year will be held in Phoenix the weekend of April 10.
