Audio Tour: International Braille And Technology Center
Recently, J.J. visited the International Braille and Technology Center at the National Federation of the Blind's Jernigan Institute and was taken on a tour of the facility. The IBTC is home to over $2.5 million in assistive technology, ranging from iPhones and tablets to huge $125,000 braille embossers.
Thanks to Ann Taylor, Clara Van Gerven, Amy Mason, and Karl Belanger for showing us around and discussing some of the latest tech trends with us.
You can read some of the work of the IBTC staff on the NFB AT Blog which regularly posts technology reviews and insights.
Also, check out the Technology Resource List for an overview of current assistive technology products, prices, and contact info. The guide is updated annually.
Sound Off:
Episode 11 was a real blast to do and wow did we get some fantastic responses from our listeners about what they like, and would like to hear, in audio gaming. We are also still getting kind words said about our April Fool's show. Like this excerpt from an email from Marlon
"Now during my quest for um technological enlightenment , i stumbled upon a resource called IBlink radio. Basically, this is a free app for Android, Apple and other devices, and of late, macintosh computers, the kindle fire, etc, that has everything that is anything as it relates to the community of people with visual impairment, and then some.
anyway, i started to listen to a weekly podcast called the Serotalk podcastt, and not only was i informed, i was pretty much entertained as well. i was hooked, for want of a better word. they were funny, lively and i found myself in despair when the podcast was over, and waiting desperately for the next episode to come about.
i dare say, that these fine people got me started in writing posts and blogs and ultimately my book."
thank you, Jamie, Joe,Ricky, Lisa and Buddy. you guys rock."
Well, as Jamie has been known to sing if asked, "Blind people gotta rock!". Here are some tweets that we mentioned on the show.
@douglas2005: Surprise! I was thoroughly entertained by the audio games discussion. Thanks to @BlindBargains for giving me a positive attitude adjustment.
@yourchangeling: My @BlindBargains watch just arrived. Unfortunately, my dictating this message cause the battery to overheat and explode.
@twynn92: @blindbargains Any idea if AD for @Netflix is in stereo? #ViDesc
The answer to that last question is yes. As in the narration is in mono and the general audio track is stereo. It is also not using the "audio ducking" technique either in case anyone was wondering.
Last Word:
Or, as J.J. has named it for a few shows now, "Joe's Bag of Crap". Here are some of the odd stories found around the internet that we thought might amuse our readers and listeners.
