Calling the current system unsustainable, AIRA is modifying the terms of its free five minute call offer starting next week.
Starting on Tuesday, August 25, there will be two versions of the free five minute call offer. Paid members will be able to use one call every 4 hours, while guests will have access to 1 call per 24-hour period. Previously, there was no limit on the number of free calls a person could make, and explorers were able to spread out some tasks over multiple five minute calls in a row.
Here's more from an AIRA Email from CEO Troy Otilio. "The COVID pandemic has brought unimaginable challenges to individuals and businesses alike, especially small businesses like Aira. Though we understand the financial situation of many of our customers and we want to do what we can to be of assistance during this especially challenging time, we cannot sustain this offer in its current form."
The free call offer, widely promoted at its launch in August 2019, has become the primary method for many explorers to use the service, so much so, that it is seen to jeopardize the future viability of the business.
Last year, the mantra was "Aira is free. Everywhere and at any time." But the company, with a renewed focus on sustainability, has realized that free does not equate to profitable.
Other free minute offers remain, including free minutes for jobseekers and business-owners, free access at various locations, and specialized help for users of the JAWS screen reader.
