Apple has announced improvements to VoiceOver's image recognition features among other forthcoming updates, as a part of a Global Accessibility Awareness Day press release.
The image recognition feature, which gained major improvements in iOS 14 last fall, will include new functionality which puts it closer to an OCR app and beyond the image recognition capabilities of other available tools.
From the press release, "Building on recent updates that brought Image Descriptions to VoiceOver, users can now explore even more details about the people, text, table data, and other objects within images. Users can navigate a photo of a receipt like a table: by row and column, complete with table headers. VoiceOver can also describe a person’s position along with other objects within images — so people can relive memories in detail, and with Markup, users can add their own image descriptions to personalize family photos."
Currently, images are described on newer iPhones including the iPhone 11 and 12 series, and the iPhone SE 2020 aamong others. users can turn on Describe Images, which gives image description for pictures, and Image Recognition, which attempts to use artificial intelligence to add accessible controls to previously unusable apps.
Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference begins with the keynote on June 7, which usually coincides with the first developer beta of iOS 15. This is a rare move to announce features for the next version of iOS ahead of this date, spurred by the growing popularity of GAAD.
