A founder and long time CEO of the Sendero Group is moving on up, literally. Mike May has accepted a job as the president of the Seattle Lighthouse. The Seattle Lighthouse is a nonprofit which employs over 400 people including over 260 that are blind and is one of the largest such organizations in the country. May takes his new post on April 3 and succeeds Kirk Adams, who stepped down in 2016 to accept the job of President for the American Foundation for the Blind.
“I am really looking forward to leading this great organization into its next 100 years of jobs, independence, and empowerment for people who are blind. As the Lighthouse nears its centennial, I am excited to get to know Lighthouse employees, programs, and help build on the infrastructure that is in place. Creating exceptional jobs for people who are blind is an exciting endeavor and I am thrilled to be a part of it,” said May in a press release.
Founded in 1999, the Sendero Group made their fame from selling specialized GPS software for the BrailleNote and other notetakers, well before GPS technology was in the mainstream. Many of these products still remain available, along with the Seeing Eye GPS app for iOS devices. They have also been involved in the research of accessible indoor navigation solutions.
Kim Casey, another charter member of the Sendero Group team will become the new CEO of that company. Sheri Harding also remains and will take on additional responsibilities according to a recent Email. Sendero still plans to produce updates for its GPS projects and continue indoor navigation research in the future.
